Alrighty. So here we go, our first podcast.

Alright, so we named our business the balanced entrepreneur, and now we're seeing this term everywhere, not always in a positive light.

It seems like balance has developed a bit of a bad reputation, maybe conjures up an image of someone with like the perfect outfit, perfectly groomed, eating a salad, drinking from a giant water bottle, baking homemade cookies for their kids, running a business, all at the same time, and somehow doing that kind of effortlessly.

But we are dancers, and we see balance as something a little bit different. So, Briar, I want to hear from you, because you have not just a dancer's background, but also a martial arts background, a Pilates background and a personal trading background. So what does balance mean to you?

Briar

Yeah, so definitely in the world of our bodies, our balance means that our muscles and our body has to work in alignment.

It means that all of our muscles and our joints and our tendons and our ligaments, they're all working together.

They're all integrated and work as one whole unit. So there's constant micro adjustments when we're trying to balance whether we're balancing on one foot or if we're in point shoes or if we're doing lifts or if we're in an arabesque, all of those things are happening all the time.

And it's almost like we're treading water. We have to look calm and cool and collected above the water, but underneath the water, our legs are constantly moving and working 100 miles an hour.

Lia

So I love that you use those terms alignment and integrating because that directly relates back to Clockworking, which is what we do - we help businesses implement the Clockwork concepts. And one of the first things we start with like Clockworking is looking at alignment.

And that's about making sure that your business is set up to move in the right direction. It's always going in the direction you want it to move.

So similar to that balance, it's making sure your body is always in alignment with each other, like everything's like your shoulders are on top of your hips and your, you know, all of that stuff.

So that is going in the right way. We're the right place.

Briar

Exactly.

Lia

And then the second part of Clockworking is integration. So you also use that term of integrating all your muscles and working together.

And that is really relatable as well, because we want to make sure that you're… everything that you do in your business is actually working in the best way possible so that your business stays in alignment.

So that alignment and integration piece is really important in Clockwork as well as in balancing your physical body.

And then when you talk to those micro adjustments, we use the metrics in our businesses to help us see where we need to make adjustments to keep us in alignment all the time.

So we're always looking at our metrics to make sure we're staying on track. So it really all kind of ties back to our concept of balance, not maybe the traditional work-life concept of balance, but our concept of balance as dancers.

Briar

Exactly, yeah. And for us, when we think about balance, it's not about how to have it all and look good while we're doing it, but it's about knowing where you wanna go and figuring out how to use all the different tools that you have to work together in order to get where you wanna go.

Lia

For sure. So another thing that just came up for me is the idea of counterbalance or coming off-balance. So it's interesting because, you know, in dance, obviously, we can't stay in a balanced state forever, right? We have to come off-balance at some point in order to get into another balanced pose or continue on with our geography, but I think that's the same just in life and in business, right? You're not going to stay balanced all the time.

Briar

Yeah, absolutely. Talking about counterbalance that makes me think more of the common idea of balance, we're not everything in life has equal weight, right?

So some things have to shift in order for us to give other things a priority. So even like in our home lives, if we're spending more time with our kids than something from our business might have to give a little bit, or if we need to have a really busy time with our business, then things at home might have to decrease a little bit in importance, right?

And as dancers, think about our arabesque. Or if you're not a dancer, think about something like a chair pose in yoga, right?

Our body isn't always in straight alignment. One part of our body is off center, so that another part of our body has to counter being off center in another direction.

So maybe one side of our body is certain muscles are working in order to allow the other side of our body to do something different. Does that make sense?

Lia

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense, and it leads back to that idea of alignment, because if you know what your business is about, you have that alignment nailed down, then it's easier to make those choices of what to put importance on, what to deprioritize, the same in life too, right?

If you know where you wanna go in life, then you can make those choices as well, but we're specifically talking about business here.

So... having that alignment in your business and that focus in your business will really help clarify those choices when you have to make those choices between what to do and what to prioritize.

I hope that gives a bit more context to the naming of our business and maybe shifts your perception of it on the concept of balance that supplies to your work and your work life.
